Goldthwaite, Texas has always been worth the drive. We’ve known it. Our neighbors know it. And now, thanks to Chet Garner and PBS Texas’s Emmy Award-winning travel series — The Daytripper — the rest of the state is finding out too.
The Daytripper crew rolled into Mills County for their 2026 season and spent a full day uncovering what makes this place special: the food, the history, the people, and yes, a goat named Rosie. Here’s everything they found.
The Mills County Goat & Sheep Auction
There’s no better introduction to Goldthwaite than a Thursday morning at the livestock barn. The Clifton family runs one of the largest goat and sheep auctions in the country right here in Mills County, and Chet got a front-row seat. Fast-talking auctioneers, buyers from across the state, and the kind of no-nonsense commerce that has defined this community for generations. Goldthwaite is the Meat Goat Capital of America, and this is the proof.
Mary’s Tacos & Burgers: A 25-Year Goldthwaite Institution
When you’re looking for the best food in Goldthwaite, TX, start at Mary’s. This family-run spot has been feeding the community for 25 years with hand-rolled tortillas, freshly fried shells, and burgers grilled by Mary’s own sons. Chet didn’t have to choose between tacos and burgers. Neither do you. Order both, and you’ll understand immediately why this place has been a local cornerstone for a quarter century.
Texas Botanical Gardens & Native American Interpretive Center
Goldthwaite’s story doesn’t start in 1893. It starts thousands of years before that. The Texas Botanical Gardens and Native American Interpretive Center brings that history to life through ancient bedrock mortars, native plants used for food and medicine, and flavors tied directly to the land — like pecan milk and prickly pear jelly. Chet explored it all, and it’s one of the most thought-provoking stops in Central Texas.
The Cabin: Goldthwaite’s Pecan Paradise
Pecans aren’t a side note in Mills County — they’re a way of life. The Cabin pecan shop is the delicious proof. Pecan coffee affogato. Cinnamon-covered treats. Decadent desserts that make leaving difficult. Chet walked in curious and walked out converted, and honestly, we expected nothing less. If you’re planning a visit to Goldthwaite, Texas, budget extra time here.
Mills County General Store: Still Showing Up After 100 Years
The Mills County General Store isn’t a museum piece — it’s a working part of this town. Bike repairs, saddle fixes, everyday essentials, and the kind of unhurried conversation that’s hard to find anywhere else. Chet spent time with the folks keeping this century-old spot alive and heard stories that connect generations. That’s Goldthwaite in a nutshell.
Mills County Historical Museum: Where Goldthwaite’s Story Lives
If you want to understand Goldthwaite, start at the Mills County Historical Museum. Housed in the 1893 Palmer Building on Fisher Street, the museum walks visitors through local life room by room: a post office, drugstore, schoolhouse, dentist’s office, kitchen, and barn workshop, all filled with real artifacts donated by real Mills County families. Before it was a museum, the building housed a Piggly Wiggly. Before that, rumor has it, a saloon. Nearly every exhibit has been built by volunteers who showed up because this community’s history matters. Walk through it slowly.
Southside Tavern: Small-Town Innovation on a Plate
The Hammond family took an old feed store and turned it into one of the most creative dining spots in the Texas Hill Country. Bacon-wrapped meatloaf medallions. Texas-sized steaks. A menu that feels both rooted in this place and genuinely inventive. Southside Tavern is the kind of restaurant that makes a town proud, and the kind of discovery that makes a Daytripper episode unforgettable.
And Then There Was Rosie
Somewhere between the auction barn and the open road, Chet ended up with a goat. Her name is Rosie. She is hairy, opinionated, and has apparently joined the Daytripper crew full-time. We take full credit. That’s just the effect Goldthwaite has on people. Rumor has it though, that Chet actually gave Rosie to his Mom!
